Description
A superb, ultra-limited micro-edition print demonstrating Walter Quirt’s mastery of automatic drawing, kinetic line, and abstract surrealism. This piece captures sweeping, energetic linear gestures portraying figures and horses charging forward against a minimally shaded horizon. Quirt's horse motifs from his late tenure as a professor at the University of Minnesota represent a pinnacle of his transition into expressive, non-objective mid-century abstraction. The absolute rarity of the "3/3" print, paired with an intact institutional exhibition archive, makes this an institutional-grade acquisition lot for collectors of American modernism Lot includes: University Gallery (University of Minnesota) exhibition brochure (January 6–26, 1959). Minnesota Museum of Art Landmark Center Galleries Walter Quirt: Lake Harriet Series exhibition announcement (June 21 – August 30, 1987). Walter Quirt: Use of White retrospective gallery exhibition booklet (July 12 – August 20, 1976). Vintage newspaper obituary clippings ("Studio Art Professor Quirt Dies at 65", 1968). Two (2) original Kodachrome color slides detailing the artist's studio works. Assorted mid-century gallery catalogs including text introductions from The Pinacotheca.
